Why do we pray & fast?

Every year, as a church community, we come together to pray and fast.

The purpose of this time of prayer is to draw closer to God, deepen our spiritual walk, and invite His presence into every area of our lives.

Fasting is simply abstaining from something in order to focus our attention and efforts towards God. Fasting leads to a decluttering of your soul. The things of this world that have a place in your heart tend to be highlighted and removed during this process. Fasting is a spiritual cleanse that creates a deep sensitivity to the things of God. Fasting says, “God we want you more than anything in this world.”

“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled.” Matthew 5:6

How do we fast?

We are dedicating each Monday of Pray First to a time of fasting. There are several types of fasting to choose from. The one you choose is between you and God. He will honor your best sacrifice. Please remember that every person is different and you should only choose what is a healthy and safe choice for you.

Complete Fast: In this type of fast, you only drink liquids, typically water with juices as an option.

Selective Fast: This involves removing certain elements from your diet. One example of a selective fast is the Daniel Fast, during which you remove meat, sugar, and bread from your diet and consume water and juice for fluids and fruits and vegetables for food.

Media Fast: This fast is a great option if you do not have much experience fasting food, have health issues that prevent you from fasting food, or if you wish to refocus certain areas of your life that are out of balance. For example, you might choose to stop using social media or watching television for the duration of the fast and then carefully bring that element back into your life in healthy doses at the conclusion of the fast.

How do I participate?

  1. Choose your fast.

  2. Choose specific times in your week that you will devote to prayer.

  3. Plan and commit.
